Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz. The name comes from the Koine Greek αμέθυστος amethysts from α- a-, “not” and μεθύσκω (Ancient Greek) methysko / μεθώ metho (Modern Greek), “intoxicate”, a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness.
